..A
Two-Stage, Low-Stress Weaning Method... |
|
| . |
How it works…
-
Stage 1: Calves
wear a light-weight, plastic QuietWean nose-flap, which prevents nursing
but allows calves to graze, drink water and engage in other aspects of
social interaction with their mothers.
-
Stage 2: Remove
the nose-flaps after 4 to 7 days and separate the pairs as you would traditionally,
only now without the stress associated with traditional weaning methods!

The Results...
-
When pairs are
nursing, calves call infrequently. Calling is also minimal when nursing
is prevented, provided the cow and calf can remain together
-
Traditional, abruptly
weaned calves call continuously when mother and milk are taken away at
the same time! Calves weaned in two stages barely call at all after separation!
-
When nursing is
prevented, two-stage calves increase the time they spend eating solid feed.
After weaning, on the first 4 days after separation, two-stage calves spend
more time eating than traditionally weaned calves, on average one extra
hour per day!
-
After separation,
traditionally weaned calves walk and pace trying to reunite with their
mother. On the first two days after separation, we found traditionally
weaned calves walked 25 miles while two-stage calves walked 10 miles!
Reduce bawling
and aimless walking and increase the time your calves spend eating! |
