Planterra Foods, a producer of plant-based protein products owned by global meat processor JBS has started operations at its new plant in Denver, CO, reducing the firm’s reliance on co-manufacturers, the company told the Denver Business Journal on Wednesday.
The company converted a former 189,000-sq-ft Smithfield Foods pet food plant to produce its Orzo brand of meat substitutes, the publication reported. Planterra Foods designed the location to have a capacity of up to 45 million tn/yr and the location features production lines capable of producing multiple types of products.
About 200 new jobs will be created with the opening of the Denver site.
Planterra announced the introduction of a new plant-based chicken cutlet called True Bite in November. The company said the products should be available in grocery stores by early 2022.
